- W4383704310 abstract "“Remembrance of things past is not necessarily the remembrance of things as they were.” (Marcel Proust). I'm not inclined to disagree with Proust, so as you read my recollections of the year I served as AAPM President, please offer me some indulgences for events left undescribed or misplaced in time. The office is a volunteer position; in common with my predecessors, I had a full-time job, although I transitioned to 0.75 FTE for the Presidential year. Unlike most of those who had served before me, I was a clinical physicist in a community hospital as a member of a private practice medical physics group, without an academic appointment. While my physicist and other colleagues valued my AAPM activities, I must admit there was a certain feeling of “alienation of affection” as I committed a significant amount of time to the Association. I had previously served on a number of AAPM committees, as AAPM Secretary and also as Chair of the Professional Council. As I call to mind the various issues on the table during my presidency, one common factor is that most of them spanned several years, and so my role was overlaid with that of others who came before me and who followed me. The Administrative Council was launched by Mary Martel, my presidential predecessor and then Chair of the Board of Directors (BOD). There was a great deal of activity associated with the ABR “2012 Initiative” a requirement for completion of a residency as a condition for the ABR certification process. I was a strong supporter, and believe this change was a major step forward for the profession. Included in the discussion was the creation of a Doctor of Medical Physics professional degree, led by past president Charles Coffey. (There are now five such degree programs accredited by CAMPEP). We created an electronic voting system for the BOD (kudos to then Secretary Gary Ezzell.) AAPM also received the first indication that an ADCL had been purchased by an equipment vendor, setting in motion a chain of events that consumed much time and treasure, but eventually succeeded (in Federal court) in maintaining the integrity of the calibration laboratory accreditation system. Without a doubt, the highlight of my year as President was the 2008 Annual meeting held in Houston. This was the high point of a year of celebration of the 50th anniversary of the AAPM, with the theme of “Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Preparing for the Future”. We honored our Charter Members (https://www.aapm.org/org/history/journal/formation.pdf) and, during the Presidential Symposium we heard from Arnold Relman, M.D., long time editor of the NEJM who shared his transformational insights on Health Care Policy. Jean St. Germain embraced her appointment as chief planner for the celebration with great skill, energy, and vision—eschewing any possibility of (in her words) a déclassé event. The Gala celebration (6 h long!) began with a reception, moved to an exceptional banquet enjoyed by about 3000 of us, and ended with the Infinite Groove Big Band playing dance hits from the 50s. It was my hope, during the 50th anniversary year, to create a sense of unity within the Association, enabling AAPM members in all endeavors to feel, as Martin Luther King described in his Letter from the Birmingham Jail, “All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.”" @default.
