- W4383704311 abstract "The phone call from John Bayouth asking me to consider being nominated for AAPM President-Elect came as a complete surprise in the spring of 2014. I had been laid-off as Associate Chief Physicist at Rhode Island Hospital 10 months earlier and decided not to look for a new position until that spring. I was interviewing for a position at the University of Maryland when the request to run for office came. It quickly became clear that, if elected, being President (a roughly 30% commitment for 3+ years) was not consistent with the needs at Maryland. Happily for me, an alternative position at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) opened up and they agreed that they would support my time in the AAPM Presidential chain if elected. I had been active in AAPM since 1981, encouraged by my mentor and long-time friend (and often leader) Ned Sternick. I had previously been secretary (1991–1993), involved in annual meetings (Finance, 1981; Chair, 1995), and active in numerous AAPM, ACR, and local chapter committees and leadership. I have also been present (in different capacities) at nearly all AAPM Board meetings since 1981. The strong support of Jatinder Palta, Director of Medical Physics, and Mitch Anscher, Chair of Radiation Oncology at VCU, were instrumental in allowing me to continue my activities for AAPM in the Presidential years. In joining the AAPM Executive Committee (EXCOM) during the 2014 Annual Meeting, I followed a succession of “Johns” (Hazel, Bayouth, and Boone) in the presidential chain. Having been a member of EXCOM in the years when AAPM moved from New York City to the Washington, DC area (1991–1993), I was immediately involved in the decisions, led by John Hazel, to move our headquarters from the American Center for Physics in College Park, MD to our current location in Alexandria, VA. During EXCOM discussions, the subject of streamlining AAPM governance was raised and I accepted the task of reviewing our governance structure. This was influenced by the changes enacted by the American Institute of Physics (AIP), which restructured its governing board from 42 members to approximately 14 in 2012 (similar actions had previously been implemented by both ASTRO and RSNA). The governance effort was a major undertaking over the years of 2014–2017. An ad hoc committee, along with support from a non-profit management group, met for 2 years, first looking at the effectiveness of AAPM leadership (from the eyes of both the Board and the Membership), and then crafting a series of documents aimed at restructuring AAPM governance to meet the standards expected of nonprofit scientific societies at that time. While unsuccessful in the final vote of the membership, many of the ideas proposed by the effort (more structured elections to promote diversity, a Governance Committee, and improved efforts to provide more opportunities for less-involved members to become involved in task groups, working groups, and committees) have been implemented in the years since. With the governance/leadership efforts somewhat in mind, the Presidential Session at the 2016 Annual Meeting focused on “Inspiring Leadership.” Leaders from RSNA (Ron Arenson), ASTRO (David Breyer), SNMMI (Ben Greenspan), and Varian (Kolleen Kennedy) discussed their path to becoming leaders and the values that AAPM members can bring to leadership in academia, private practice, and industry. A special symposium on Wednesday was focused on “NCI-Supported Research Activities” with a talk by Douglas Lowy, MD, the acting Director of the NCI. The Washington, DC. venue for the Annual Meeting was well suited to our meeting (so much so that attendance saw a significant bump and the AAPM's return to the DC area was planned for both 2022 and 2025). My tenure in the Presidential chain was an incredible, though time-consuming, experience; one that I am very thankful for having. During those 3+ years, I enjoyed time with many AAPM chapters, colleagues at ACR, ASTRO, IOMP, IAEA, and participating in numerous efforts to improve the recognition of medical physicists worldwide. The friendships made over long EXCOM and Board meetings continue to this day. I thank the Membership for giving me that opportunity to serve them and the AAPM." @default.
