- W4383868475 abstract "I am Charlie Coffey and held the office of AAPM President in 2001. While AAPM President, I served as Chair of Medical Physics and Medical Physics Program Director in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. My primary academic appointment was in clinical radiotherapy physics with responsibilities in clinical medical physics service and education. I served the AAPM as Board Member-at-Large from 1987 to 1989, served as AAPM Secretary from 1994 to 1996, and was a contributing member to AAPM Task Group Reports #60 and #61. During my tenure as President, two significant events come to mind. The first was my pleasure to announce at the Board of Director's Meeting in July that an agreement had been reached between the ABR and the ACMP concerning Professional Certification Pathways. Discussions between the two entities, with joint meetings hosted by the AAPM, had been ongoing throughout 2000. Leadership from both organizations submitted written statements concerning the Certification Agreement for the 2002 September/October Edition of the Newsletter. The second memory was the tragic events that took place on the morning of September 11, 2001. In both events, diligent responses, proven cooperation, and resilience of individuals and leaders, allowed our association and our country to heal and move forward. The Long-Range Planning Committee requested me to appoint an ad hoc Committee on Imaging within the AAPM for the purpose of increasing the future presence and emphasis on clinical imaging in our profession; Richard Morin was appointed Chair. The Annual Meeting in 2001 was in Salt Lake City, Utah. Our hosts delivered a splendid setting for the varied AAPM activities of associational business, professionalism, education, and social interactions. Ravi Nath was awarded the prestigious William D. Coolidge Award at the Annual Awards Program. The President's Symposium that year was “Molecular Imaging and Radiation Therapy Treatment Planning.” This same subject remains a “hot” topic for both medical physics imaging and therapy today as new technologies are being introduced and clinical trials are emerging in both Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging and biology-guided radiotherapy. With 3 years on EXCOM, 1 year each as President-Elect, President, and Chairman of the Board, I am convinced that the many positive experiences far out-weighed the few difficult experiences. My fellow AAPM EXCOM leaders (Rob Gould, Ken Hogstrom, Geoff Ibbott, Melissa Martin, Sal Trofi, Martin Weinhous, and Gerald White) afforded me new friendships and yielded positive memories. Interactions, relationships, and duties within EXCOM led me to grow both as a medical physics professional and an organizational leader. Additionally, my year as President gave me the opportunity to meet AAPM members from across the country and the world, greet and thank our many corporate-sponsored vendors, and interact with leadership in our sister radiological professional and educational organizations. AAPM leadership opportunities continually remind that serving is more rewarding than being served." @default.
