- W4383912419 abstract "Thuringian historians focus on Ernst of Saxe-Weimar and his family as the founders of Saxe-Gotha. Until now, little has been known about his first son Johann Ernst, who was born in 1638, before Ernst became duke of Gotha. The birth of Johann Ernst was a moment of stability in times of war and insecurity. On the occasion of his birth and his death two months later, the House of Saxe-Weimar published three sermons. These were sermons for (1) the boy’s baptism, (2) his mother and (3) his funeral. As sources they reveal hopes, expectations, and gratitude for the birth of the firstborn son and the disappointment and grief when the boy died. This article explores the significance of the firstborn son for the House of Saxe-Weimar in times of war and instability. The sermons bear witness to the significance of the prince’s birth for the dynasty as a whole as well as for his parents. They reveal how princely offspring could be used to bolster dynastic legitimacy, but also how the parental couple were concerned about his personal future and well-being." @default.
