- W4384080805 abstract "The word deepfake has now entered the common language to indicate deceptive video content created through image synthesis techniques based on AI tools and uploaded on Internet to spread false news and/or discredit the subject represented. The tools used to create deepfake contents are generally automatic learning techniques, mainly, but among others, a generative antagonist network that allows to synthesize images by superimposing other images and audio contents on an already existing video content, to create connections between body movements and facial expressions or between facial movements and (attributed) words. The result is, in fact, a new video content that does not correspond to reality, in which a subject can be attributed actions and/or speech that not only have they never performed and pronounced, but, in most of the cases, are very distant from their personality. Although the phenomenon is very recent and the word deepfake itself was coined and spread in 2017, it took just a few years for the creation and dissemination of deepfake videos to assume the dimensions of a mass phenomenon, also due to development of software applications (easy to use) that allow to create short videos and/or deepfake images using even just a smartphone. The implications of the massification of the phenomenon, however, present more than one criticality, since the dissemination of false content can not only affect public opinion, but also create situations of abuse and damage infringement of rights (first privacy and image) of the represented subjects, as well as foment illegal acts such as cyberbullying and revenge-porn. The essay, after analysing the origins of the phenomenon and the most widespread AI techniques for the realization of deepfakes, will focus on the most relevant legal issues both for the protection of individuals and for the protection of correct information and public opinion; at the same time, some “lawful” uses of AI techniques for the creation of image synthesis, for cinematographic and artistic purposes will also be analysed." @default.
