- W4384156640 abstract "Preference for sons over daughters is common in many parts of Asia. This preference can lead to skewed sex ratios at birth which has demographic implications. China and India are well-studied regions with high sex ratios, but Pakistan has comparatively received lesser scholarly attention concerning son preference, even though Pakistan also has a strong patriarchal society. This study tests the relationship between a mother's educational level and desired son preference in Pakistan. Data from the nationally representative Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey (2017–2018) uses multinomial logistic regressions and ordinary least square regressions including covariates that control for confounding factors. The results show that an increase in maternal educational level has a negative effect on desired son preference even after controlling for the wealth status of the household, mother's age, husband's education level, and area of residence." @default.
