- W4384282941 abstract "Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) belong to a large family of chemical molecules known as fluorocarbons. These are gaseous halogen compounds endowed with high thermal, chemical and biological stability. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid and perfluorooctanoic acid are part of the PFC family and belong to the polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) class in particular. PFAS are water soluble and can be present in groundwater, runoff water, discharges from sewage treatment stations and industrial discharges. Some reports indicate that the presence of PFAS in wastewater could be the main source of contamination in surface waters. Fluorine is the most electronegative element and as such resists oxidation in order to retain its electrons. PFAS do not contain aromatic bonds or phenolic structures. The adsorption of organic molecules onto the surface of activated carbon is based on mechanisms dependent on physical processes, such as electrostatic attractions, or chemisorption." @default.
