- W4384283144 abstract "Beneficial elements are emerging as novel players for innovative crop production. From the nutritional point of view, they do not fulfill the principle of essentiality for plants. However, when applied at low concentrations, beneficial elements may trigger positive stimulatory responses in plants, thus improving crop production and quality, and induce mechanisms of resistance or tolerance to cope with environmental stressors of biological, chemical, or physical nature causing adverse conditions. Grouped by the corresponding atomic number (indicated as superscript after the chemical symbol of the element), to date, the list of beneficial elements includes sodium (Na 11 ), aluminium (Al 13 ), silicon (Si 14 ), titanium (Ti 22 ), vanadium (V 23 ), cobalt (Co 27 ), selenium (Se 34 ), iodine (I 53 ), lanthanum (La 57 ), and cerium (Ce 58 ). Importantly, beneficial elements are thought to induce hormesis in biological systems including plants. Hormesis is an adaptive biphasic dose response in which an agent gives stimulating and beneficial effects to biological systems when the quantity applied is small or moderate, and thus the system improves its functionality or performance to face the challenge imposed by such an agent. Hence, when correctly managed, beneficial elements may become paramount factors to face two of the foremost daunting challenges for humankind nowadays: ensuring food security and good nutrition under restrictive conditions imposed by climate change. Herewith, we aimed to outline some of the most recent and salient effects of beneficial elements in plants and describe how these elements are accumulated in plant tissues, considering the thresholds among neutral, positive, and negative effects depending on the specific concentrations applied, forms in which elements are supplied, environmental conditions, developmental stages, and plant genotypes, among others." @default.
