- W4384283333 abstract "Cobalt (Co) is not stated as an essential microelement for plants, but it is considered beneficial for particular plant taxa owing to its role in physio-biochemical processes. Lower levels of Co as beneficial element received less attention in recent decades than phytotoxic effects at higher concentrations. Plants accumulate Co (mainly in roots due to lower mobility) only in lower amounts, while its mobility, distribution, or accumulation capacity depend upon the target plant species. The uptake and transport of Co ions in plant organs is controlled by different mechanisms in different plants and diverse transporters (probably via IRT1, iron regulated transporter1). Pertaining to beneficial aspects, lower levels of Co enhanced plant growth and yield characteristics by improving the nitrogen fixation ability, nutritional quality, nutrients uptake, physio-biochemical reactions, antioxidant defence systems, and plant tolerance by improving or alleviating the phytohormones synthesis or abiotic stresses, respectively. Still, the threshold levels of Co-induced beneficial effects are not clear. The beneficial aspects of Co deserve thorough investigations regarding its utilization as ‘stimulating agent’ for enhancing crops fertilization or nutritional value to feed growing global population. This chapter emphasizes the mechanisms involved in the uptake, transport, and potential beneficial effects of Co on whole plant growth traits." @default.
