Silicon plays a beneficial role in plants, and the extent to which plants absorb Si is frequently correlated with the benefits Si provides to plants. This chapter provides an in-depth discussion of the molecular mechanism involved in the silicon uptake at the root level, subsequent transport to aerial tissues and its deposition in diverse cell types, tissues, and intercellular spaces. The specific pattern of deposition alters morphological and physiological traits linked to improved plant resistance under various biotic and abiotic stresses. Further biochemical composition of silica structure “phytoliths,” their deposition, and their involvement in the silicon biogeochemical cycle have also been discussed." @default.
