- W4384343491 abstract "Indiscriminate crossbreeding seeking increased productivity beside natural and manmade disasters are among the identified potential threats deteriorating the diversity of small ruminant genetic resources in Ethiopia. Therefore, increasing animal productivity while reverting the trends of the ongoing potential threats to their diversity is critically needed. Several genetic improvement programs have been practiced so far but failed to fulfill the expected goals due to the mainly low input system of the country and their failure to participate communities. Therefore, community based breeding program (CBBP), designed for low input system, which focus on the use of indigenous animals with active participation and decision making of its members from beginning throughout the implementation period have been identified as a choice. Since its introduction, CBBP has been practiced widely across the country. Therefore, this review was aimed to highlight the major achievements and challenges of CBBP as a potential approach for conservation and sustainable utilization of Ethiopian indigenous small ruminants. The use of indigenous animals, its positive direction towards elimination of negative selection and minimizing inbreeding and mortality rate were among the achievements of the program towards conservation of indigenous animals. The improved husbandry practices found after successive trainings, the involvement of farmers during the setup of breeding objectives, and the respect given to the farmers’ preferences created by the implementation of the program have improved different biological and socio-economic growth parameters. The improved growth, reproduction and survival traits of the indigenous animals were among the biological significances obtained, while, the improved farmers’ market participation, improved average annual income and improved mutton consumption were among the socio-economic growth parameters. The presence of few number of animals per household, lack of willingness to participate (dropouts) among the members, the difficulty observed to balance breeding objectives and farmers’ qualitative preferences, the management of traits with low heritability, the high budget requirement, the within members’ management problems regarding financial issues, the disease prevalence and feed shortage were the challenges observed during the implementation of the program. Moreover, the expansion of interbreeding due to the distribution of improved sires of one breed within the breeding tract (origin) of other breeds was also regarded as a challenge of CBBP towards conservation of indigenous animals. Giving due consideration to interbreeding control mechanism and other challenges management system, CBBPs are strongly recommended for low input smallholder livestock production system to acquire desired goals." @default.
