- W4384343642 abstract "Objective(s) Cervicofacial infections (CFI) are bacterial infections that originate in the upper aerodigestive tract and involve common spaces of the head and neck. The objective of this study is to describe and analyze the epidemiological and clinical variables, treatment and evolution of patients with diagnosis of CFI treated at the Parmenio Piñero Hospital, Argentina. Study Design The inclusion criteria were all patients older than 14 years with diagnostic criteria for CFI, who were treated at the hospital in the period 2016-2023, and whose treatment required hospitalization and intervention under general anaesthesia. Results 201 patients were included. 85.07% of the CFI were odontogenic. The mean hospital length of stay (hospitalization) was 4.58 days. Diabetics, smokers and drinkers had a higher average hospitalization and postoperative complications. The most common symptoms were pain, trismus and toothache. Fever increased hospitalization by 1.6 days and nausea by 9 days. The most affected anatomical spaces were submandibular and pterygomandibular. Buccal and infraorbital, temporal, and parotid spaces were associated with longer hospitalization. 1 patient died from septic shock. Conclusion(s) The treatment of CFI is surgical. Health professionals should make a timely referral in cases of CFI, and preferably include early treatment of the infectious focus.
