- W4384346320 abstract "The purpose of this chapter is to review the role of the social worker with patients who are experiencing heart and lung illness and failure. The severity and life-threatening components of heart and lung failure impact a person’s life in a multifaceted manner. The location and function of these organs create a relationship wherein trouble with one organ easily affects the other (Rosenkranz S, Bauersachs J, Herz 44:475, 2019). Patients experience a range of physical symptoms, such as breathlessness, fatigue, or chest pain, in addition to mental health distress which creates a web of complicated psychosocial concerns. The symptomatic nature of cardiac and respiratory failure can greatly reduce the quality of life, which impacts physical and emotional health. Social workers in various settings can both provide support in critical medical moments, and advocate for, facilitate, and intervene with emotional support and mediation to promote comprehension, reduce communication problems, and enhance adjustment, decision-making and resilience in the face of these challenges, thus improving overall well-being for these adults. This chapter will briefly review the psychosocial issues typically present for patients experiencing heart and lung failure and discuss social work interventions associated with improved outcomes." @default.
