- W4384346329 abstract "Sustainability is the key question in the progression of human life. Aquaculture sector is often questioned on the grounds of environmental pollution and sustainability issues. The supply of key inputs in the aquaculture industry, that is, fish meal and oil, is now parallelly used in other sectors as well, thus limiting its supply. On the other hand, the effluent discharge from the aqua-farms is a serious concern that may impact the open ecosystem. Among the solutions, advanced technology like biofloc offers a ready-made solution to these issues. The concept of biofloc was initially developed for wastewater treatment which further expanded to aquaculture practice. The technology mostly focuses on effective nutrient recycling through the promotion of heterotrophic bacteria through manipulation of system’s carbon-to-nitrogen ratio above a level of 10:1. Thus, two major benefits derived, that is, in situ food in forms of microbial floc proteins and water quality management through quick assimilation of nitrogenous elements, can help the system to run stably over the long culture period. Apart from this, the health and metabolic boosting capabilities of the flocs are well described. In this chapter, the key benefits, apart from the key factors required for maintenance of the system, are narrated for a wider knowledge and benefits of the academicians." @default.
