- W4384455834 abstract "Telehealth has been successfully implemented in the prehospital setting to expedite emergency care, though applications are still in their infancy. We publish a review from Western Australia that asks ‘what telehealth platforms have been used to facilitate communication between prehospital healthcare providers and emergency clinicians in the past decade?’ The authors conclude that platforms began to provide prehospital staff with medical support for general emergency care using a range of devices to transmit video, audio and biomedical data. Challenges to telehealth involved technical, clinical and organisational issues. Telehealth platforms to facilitate prehospital to ED communication continue to develop but need technological advances and improved network connectivity to support implementation in the prehospital environment. A study describing the experiences of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients and factors that shaped their experiences of ED visits in regional settings, reports on four themes of interest (a) patients' waiting times in ED, (b) cultural determinants of health, (c) treatment services, and (d) safety, security, and privacy. A holistic approach and a robust hospital commitment to address cultural needs while considering overall health, social and emotional wellbeing, will enhance Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients' satisfaction for ED visits. In a letter to the editor we are reminded of the ‘unexpected consequences of activating ‘code stroke’ inappropriately, consequences that can negatively impact the patient in question, other patients and the hospital itself. Constant vigilance is needed. Venomous invasive ants are rapidly dispersing throughout oceanic islands. Clinicians unfamiliar with envenomation or venom-induced anaphylaxis may be unprepared for the range of possible reactions and corresponding treatments. A rise in invasive hymenopteran stings on oceanic islands is inevitable, and proactively improving public awareness and medical training can save lives. Forty eight patients stung by a stinging tree plant visited Cairns ED over three years. A report from the ED concludes that pain onset is immediate and there are currently no clear first aid or definitive treatment guidelines. Staying with the theme of toxinology, we publish an audit from Monash in Victoria. It reveals how treatment of latrodectism is changing following publication of the RAVE-2 antivenom efficacy study. It is interesting reading. We recently published a paper reporting on the economic consequences of injury in female Australian footballers. We now publish a study from Victoria reporting the characteristics of wrist, hand and finger injuries in Australian Footballers presenting to EDs. The authors conclude that the differences in injury type, location and mechanism between females and males, and children and adults, suggest an opportunity for customised injury prevention and management strategies by gender and age. This is a neglected tropical disease in the Barwon region of Victoria. It is an emerging public health threat with local and national ramifications. We publish a thoughtful Opinion piece suggesting that the clinical role of nurse practitioners in emergency medicine more closely resembles that of doctors rather than nurses. Associate membership in ACEM would recognize their role in treating patients and would enhance their access to relevant continued professional development as endorsed by ACEM. The focus in this issue is on leadership in Emergency Medicine." @default.
