• W4384564900 abstract "This article investigates the fabrication of a novel polyethylene (PE) composite plate reinforced with granite sawdust (GN) and explores a promising pathway for the utilization of GN. Specifically, we focus on the surface modification of GN using aluminum ester coupling agent DL-411 and compare the properties of PE composites filled with unmodified and modified GN. To elucidate the mechanism of surface modification, we employ FT-IR and XPS characterization techniques. Our results indicate that the DL-411 coupling agent is firmly attached to the surface of GN through chemical bonding. Additionally, the introduction of the coupling agent leads to the formation of a hydrophobic coating on the GN surface, which is evidenced by an increase in the water contact angle after modification. We find that the modified GN/PE composite exhibits superior mechanical properties compared to the unmodified GN/PE composite, including higher tensile strength, flexural strength, and unnotched impact strength. This improvement is attributed to the enhanced interfacial adhesion between the GN fillers and the polymer matrix, which is confirmed by SEM observation of the tensile fracture section. The presence of the coupling agent also contributes to a more effective transfer of internal stresses within the composite. Moreover, our results show that the addition of the coupling agent leads to an increase in the thermal conductivity of the PE composites filled with GN. Overall, our findings highlight the potential of surface-modified GN as a reinforcing filler for polymer-based composites, with broad implications for the development of high-performance materials." @default.
