- W4384566613 abstract "
Background
Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a change management approach that focuses on what is working well, analysing why it is working well and then doing more of it. The basic principle is ‘What we focus on- grows’. This contrasts with adverse incident (DATIX) which has focuses on negative events and behaviours.
Aims
To hold 2 LIFE sessions (Capturing and Learning from a Story) in paediatrics and neonates and analyse the results.
Methods
2 LIFE sessions were advertised and held in winter 2022. Both sessions were open to nurses and doctors. We chose 2 ‘excellence reports’ of working together as a team – the first between nurses and doctors during transfer a sick child in paediatrics. The second was between junior and senior trainee during a neonatal admission. We had 7 and 12 participants for the 1st and 2nd session respectively. The sessions were each one hour long. A facilitator (certified AI expert) led the sessions with a template for questions about the excellence report that was shared at the beginning of the session. A scribe captured the discussion and the actions agreed by attendees.
Results
The staff attending the session took turns in answering each question based on the anonymised positive report. The discussions brought out the feelings of stress and highlight the importance of communication while working together as a team. Trainees felt it was not easy to feel part of a team during their first weeks in a new post and the importance of checking with nurses if they are concerned about a child. Each staff member (nurse, doctor, and admin) volunteered to take a small action forward towards the end of the session.
Conclusion
We had noticed the difficulties in teamwork during stabilisation of sick child and admission of a neonate leading to adverse incident reports. Rather than just concentrate on RCA (root cause analysis) or SI (serious Inquiry) we decided to find excellence reports on similar situations and hold these sessions to promote positive attitudes. We found that staff were much more willing to engage in learning from positive incidents, felt comfortable sharing their thoughts and left the session feeling inspired to work together as a team in the future. We aim to hold regular AI sessions in our departments and at grand rounds in the future. 1. https://positivepsychology.com/appreciative-inquiry/ 2. https://www.centerforappreciativeinquiry.net/more-on-ai/what-is-appreciative-inquiry-ai/" @default.
