- W4384570819 abstract "Public policies have a significant impact on the daily lives of all people. This is particularly true for children and their families who are impacted by adverse experiences. Despite the growing research base of empirically supported prevention and intervention programs and supports, there continue to be gaps between policy and science. This chapter will explore how such policy gaps can be reduced by gaining a better understanding of the perspectives, priorities, tools, and resources of policymakers. It also addresses how child-oriented researchers and practitioners can more effectively marshal and translate their knowledge and expertise to ensure that child and family needs, specifically issues related to adverse childhood experiences, receive adequate attention and action from policymakers. To facilitate development of bidirectional relationships between policymakers and experts in child maltreatment and other early adversity, this chapter offers practical insights for psychologists on understanding the policymaking process, appreciating policymaker resources and limitations, gaining familiarity with relevant policy, communicating effectively with policymakers, and understanding the unique contributions that psychologists can make by translating the science of adverse childhood experiences to inform the policy process and increase evidence-based policymaking." @default.
