- W4384636698 abstract "Thomas Pringle (1789–1834) worked with the sonnet in the larger context of the Romantic-era revival of the form that had begun with the poets of Sensibility, and then continued through the first and second generations of Romantic poets. He is shown here to have been closely aligned with this long tradition, in terms both of sonnet form (particularly rhyme patterns) and topics, which were deeply influenced by the wider conventions and preoccupations. Most importantly, it is argued that in the course of his career, his sonnets underwent a major re-orientation away from the models of Sensibility (poems of intimate subjectivity), to those of the Miltonic-Wordsworthian tradition, devoted to matters of public debate. Crucially, this shift in his sonnet orientation is shown to have coincided with his emigration from Scotland to the Cape Colony in 1820, which initiated an important new phase in his work, shaped by his colonial experiences into a poetry of conscience and political activism." @default.
