- W4384821284 abstract "Since March 2020, higher education students in Ecuador have been learning through digital classes. Digital education conceptually represents an educational modality that provides autonomy and a freeway for knowledge construction synchronously and asynchronously. It includes the students’ self-development in the medium and long term, with the support of previously trained teachers, standardized didactic-pedagogical material, and specific platforms. However, especially in emerging countries, adopting digital classes may neglect the students and teachers’ needs and the universities’ ability to offer that. To consider the inherent challenges of digital education, that is economic, social and educational, we used three online validated questionnaires on distance learning, the use of information technologies and skills with particular apps with a convenience sample of students (200) and teachers in International Studies (25). Building on our participatory action research in 2020, in which teachers used the opportunity of teaching online with new digital tools in university courses to analyze their problematic frames of reference and develop their ideas and practices of teaching and learning, the three questionnaires, with slight modifications to ensure their response are reflections of how they think students will respond, was also applied to teachers. The students participating in this research were from the third and fourth year of International Studies at the University of Azuay, Cuenca, Ecuador. We were particularly curious in what ways global trends are affecting these students’ lives with experiences that have been shaped by interactions with international digital peers through games and apps rather than campus-based activities. How are these worldwide student interactions geopolitically mediated by the cultural imperialism flowing from the Global North to the South? What are students and teachers’ perceptions of students’ experience at the interstices of power, privilege and oppression associated with being emerging ‘third’ world citizens in Ecuador?" @default.
