- W4384916386 abstract "Coaching has become a very important facet of personal and team development, especially in the business world, over the last few years. An article by Atul Gawande in the New Yorker in 2011 highlighted the potential of coaching for surgeons (Gawande 2011). Despite this article, “coaching” still has not been widely adopted by surgeons, compared to other leaders in our community. Like Gawande, we find it difficult to understand why surgeons continue to lag behind the executive world in the uptake of coaching as a self-improvement tool. Although Caprice Greenberg and her colleagues have developed a coaching program for surgeons in Wisconsin, in the USA (Greenberg et al. 2018), few others have published in this field. Perhaps it is because surgeons feel they have perfected their craft and have no need for a coach. Alternatively, many surgeons may not be aware of the principles of coaching and accompanying benefits, as a potential method of continuing professional development (CPD). In this chapter, we would like to illustrate many of the positive impacts that a coaching culture can provide to health professionals including surgeons and their patients." @default.
