- W4384946126 abstract "The buffering capacity of soil is the ability of the soil to saturate a given concentration of either a base or acidic solution before any significant change in pH. As such, the buffering capacity of soils plays a role in defining the longevity of soil reaction to the pH adjustment by aluminium sulphate and calcium carbonate. In addition, the buffering capacity of soils determines the amount of amendment required to raise or lower the pH to the desired values. Acidification of soils and water in coal and metal mining districts is a major problem throughout the world. Various factors affect the soil's pH buffering capacity, including Al complexation and decomplexation by organic matter; protonation and deprotonation of acidic groups on organic matter, oxides, and hydroxides; carbonate dissolution and precipitation; as well as ion exchange, with dissolution of clay minerals and primary minerals also being significant at longer time scales or in soils with high concentrations of minerals susceptible to weathering. All these processes are regulated by the pH fluctuations. The goal of AMD mitigation is to neutralize acid, prevent mine materials from being exposed to oxygen and flowing/percolating water, or otherwise prevent bacteria from catalysing the necessary reactions. In order to achieve these, various methods are employed, namely; mine land reclamation, soil removal, direct treatment, filling, relocation, isolation, bacterial control, and water diversion. Traditionally, limestone has been used to neutralize acid discharges and amend soils affected by acidic discharges. However, the soils in some mining areas have shown resistance to pH fluctuations impaired by mining activities. As such, these soils should be considered and be incorporated as part of the mine land rehabilitation plan." @default.
