- W4385152245 abstract "Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible loss of vision. Although blindness is the most feared consequence of glaucoma, there is growing evidence that even mild disease may have a significant impact on the quality of life. The most common and earliest treatment consists of self-administered topical ocular hypotensive eye drops to slow down progressive retinal ganglion cell damage and prevent vision loss. However, medical treatment can lead to other complications, such as ocular surface disease and systemic side effects. Furthermore, patient compliance is required in the treatment of chronic disease. On the other hand, glaucoma surgical procedures are limited by the wound-healing process, which may result in failure. Antifibrotic agents are routinely used to control wound healing but may lead to early and long-term complications. Recently, due to the improvement of drug delivery systems, different approaches have been proposed to better treat glaucoma patients. This review focuses on the use of nanotechnology in the surgical treatment of glaucoma." @default.
