- W4385154052 abstract "While the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic on everyday transport and mobility have received broad international discussion, walking — at the base of transport options and a promising mode for a low carbon transition — has barely appeared as a recognized transport option in the literature. However, we argue that walking has changed most notably in its qualities during the pandemic. We investigate these qualities of and changes to walking during the pandemic, guided by the perspective of social practices. We study the entanglements of everyday practices, elements of materials and meanings, as well as ambivalences arising. Based on a systematic review of the research literature on walking during the pandemic, we systematize the findings according to social practice theories and synthesize the identified results in complexes around the ambivalences of time, safety and social belonging. This review, thus, adds value by contributing a perspective of social practices on walking during the pandemic. This provides a more comprehensive understanding of changes, connections, and apparent paradoxes and reveals current research gaps. Furthermore, it delivers implications for policy and planning which could benefit from an updated and multi-dimensional understanding of how walking is constituted and develops, in order to plan for post-pandemic neighborhoods and cities. From our augmented perspective on walking, we conclude that the ambition of policy and planning as well as of research should also include improving the qualitative experience of walking." @default.
