- W4385187918 abstract "This study discusses findings from a three-year professional development program, the goal of which was to reempower educators to embrace teaching and learning as a dynamic process that draws on indigenous knowledge and values in developing twenty-first century skills. Through a new framework—STEMS2 (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, social sciences and sense of place) education—the program (A‘o Hawai‘i) empowered teachers to implement place- and culture-based teaching and learning pathways that fostered student engagement and achievement via real-world application of interdisciplinary content knowledge while supporting the socialemotional development required for community and civic engagement. A‘o Hawai‘i had three primary objectives: (1) to build participants’ capacity to serve as educational leaders in their communities; (2) to increase educators’ knowledge of and ability to design STEMS based units that incorporate Mathematics and Language Arts Common Core (CCSI) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) with indigenous knowledge, skills and (3) to support teachers’ implementation of their place and culture-based STEMS2 units. We explore the impact of participation in A‘o Hawai‘i in two parts. First, we share the impact of participation from the lens of an embedded case study of three participants: Stuart, Pi‘ilani, and Annie. These findings are based on an analysis of learning journey observation checklists, unit plans, community presentations, student work artifacts, and group participant interviews. Second, we discuss the overall impact A‘o Hawai‘i had on all participants. These findings are based on an analysis of participants’ applications, learning journey observation checklists, participant surveys (pre/post), and STEMS2 semantics surveys (pre/post)." @default.
