- W4385202202 abstract "The modern twentieth century observatory, beginning with the Mt. Wilson Observatory, is described, and the pioneering work of George Ellery Hale, Harlowe Shapley, Edwin Hubble and Martin Humason, are described. The technologies of aluminization and development of mountain observatories like Mt. Wilson greatly increased the light gathering power of telescopes and enabled systematic mapping of global clusters and photography of a wide range of galaxies for the first time. These discoveries enabled Harlowe Shapley and Heber Curtis to debate the large-scale structure of the Milky Way, and for the first time, models of the Milky Way were developed showing the Sun’s location at the edge of a large disk-shaped galaxy, itself shown to be a “spiral nebula.” The development of these models, as well as the first discovery of the expanding universe by Edwin Hubble are described, along with the resulting models of the Big Bang that emerged from these new observations." @default.
