- W4385216042 abstract "This chapter focuses on Malayala Manorama newspaper’s historical and contemporary address of children as consumers. Drawing on a relational analysis of dystopic and utopic visions of childhood mediated by the newspaper, this chapter highlights the complex relationship between newspapers and modern childhoods. Within colonial modernity, the literate Malayali child was invaluable for the newspaper for mediating visions of a utopic, secular, and non-hierarchical Malayali society; thereby establishing itself as an agent of modernity. In contemporary times, the newspapers address of children have been oriented toward helping families and schools tackle the excesses of modernity, such as the putative dangers associated with children’s unregulated use of internet-based media. Mediated stories of such dystopic childhoods provide newspapers a rich soil for re-imagining childhood in ways that resolve the paradox of modernity. While utopic childhoods envisioned by newspaper initiatives like Nalla Paadam (Good Lessons) seem to be a critique of middle-class parenting gone awry, I show that these initiatives garner political and public consensus because they dovetail with middle-class aspirations." @default.
