- W4385280256 abstract "Extract Concluding our exploration of the Leviathan tradition in Jewish and Christian materials, we must once again draw our attention to the epistemological peculiarities of this ancient mythological trend. We have learned in the course of our study that, in some Jewish materials, Leviathan and Behemoth were envisioned as living embodiments of the divine mysteries that have been preserved by the deity from the beginning of Creation in order to be revealed fully to the elect at the eschaton. It has also been demonstrated that such a reified epistemological construct is deeply rooted in the ancient understanding of divine knowledge as a reality that is objectively present in the otherworldly realms. Such an otherworldly reality, therefore, cannot be transmitted through conventional, introspective avenues of knowledge’s acquisition since it requires a living “host” or a “carrier.” While some divine knowledge was reified in various patriarchs and prophets, other knowledge, especially knowledge about the origins and nature of evil, is predestined to be reified in the primordial monsters. In some Jewish and even Christian accounts, Leviathan and Behemoth take on such a role as the reified knowledge about the economy of evil. In the Christian interpretive tradition, however, such a reified mode of the divine knowledge’s transmission was eventually marginalized after the Greek philosophical vocabulary became the standard conceptual vehicle of Christian doctrine. In contrast, in later Jewish mystical lore, such imagery of reification not only was kept alive but also entered a new symbolic dimension in which the primordial monsters were understood as the embodied mysteries of the Sitra Ahra." @default.
