- W4385288521 abstract "Pre-existing antibodies elicited by prior infection or vaccination are often the first line of defense against an invading pathogen. In addition to protection mediated by active infection or “active immunization”, there is also another approach described as “passive immunization”, which involves the transfer of specific antibodies to an otherwise naïve host to provide protection by binding and/or neutralizing the infectious agent or their most biologically relevant disease-causing toxins. In nature, the transfer of maternal antibodies from mammalian mothers to their newborn offspring provides immediate protection against pathogens the mother had previously encountered. This mechanism of transferable protection can be largely mimicked through the direct administration of polyclonal or monoclonal antibodies as a form of prophylaxis or as treatment for many viral and bacterial diseases in addition to having potential benefit in some fungal and parasitic infections. As with any therapeutic approach, the protective efficacy observed with passive immunization is often negatively correlated with the degree of disease severity at the time of antibody transfer. This indicates that prompt treatment at the earliest signs of infection or disease is key to providing the best clinical outcome. With recent advances in the development and manufacturing of highly potent monoclonal antibodies, including some that have been engineered for more durable half-life maintenance in vivo, passive immunization has a bright future." @default.
