- W4385294196 abstract "The evolution of modern trauma care has largely abandoned the use of diagnostic peritoneal lavage in routine practice. Ready availability computed tomography scanning and the near ubiquitous availability of the FAST (focused assessment with sonography in trauma) ultrasound has often relegated the diagnostic peritoneal lavage (DPL) to an afterthought. DPL still plays a role especially in settings diminished or taxed resources. Mastery of the technique, ability to interpret the results, and an understanding of the limitations of DPL remain relevant to the trauma surgeon. Similarly, an evolution in the general surgical use of laparoscopy and an escalation in the training of this technique has led to greater enthusiasm for its use in trauma by general surgeons who routinely use this technique. Marrying the critical needs of the trauma patient with the limitations in expediency that come with laparoscopic approaches are paramount to the decision to use this technique. This chapter reviews the current state of DPL and laparoscopy in the approach to the care of abdominal trauma." @default.
