- W4385353804 abstract "Microalgae can be used to recycle the fertilizer nutrients in domestic and industrial wastewater to produce fuels, fertilizers, and other biobased products, and meanwhile reduce the disposal costs and negative environmental impacts of the wastewater. Various nanomaterials with unique structures have been studied to improve the algal productivity and harvesting, CO2 and light conversion efficiencies, and accumulation of specific chemical compounds in algal biomass. However, nanoparticles could both induce and inhibit algal growth depending on their characteristics and concentrations, and algal species, more studies should be conducted to analyze nanoparticle characteristics and optimize nanoparticle concentrations to improve their performance in algal cultivation. Noble metal nanoparticles such as gold, silver, and platinum have many applications such as cancer diagnosis, drug delivery, antibiotics, and catalysts. Microalgae, on the other hand, can be used to biologically synthesize metallic nanoparticles, particularly noble and heavy metal nanoparticles by recovering and using those metals in wastewater, and producing high-value functional nanoparticles. This book chapter reviewed various studies on (1) nanoparticle additives for the enhancement of microalgae photosynthesis and harvesting, (2) microalgae as a green factory for the biosynthesis of metallic nanoparticles, and (3) the use of microalgae and nanoparticles for the bioremediation of wastewater." @default.
