- W4385374643 abstract "Hantaviruses and the diseases that they cause have a long association with war and military operations. The initial discovery of hantaviruses traces back to the early 1950s when United Nations troops were deployed during the border conflict between North and South Korea. More than 3000 cases of an acute febrile illness were seen among the troops, with severe cases leading to renal failure, shock, hemorrhagic manifestations, and death. The disease was initially referred to as Korean hemorrhagic fever (KHF), but KHF and similar diseases caused by related hantaviruses occurring throughout the Old World are now collectively termed hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. In the early 1990s, a second group of New World hantaviruses was found to cause a highly lethal acute respiratory distress syndrome known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Scientists from the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) have played key roles in all aspects of hantavirus research, from discovery through development of candidate vaccines. In this review, I provide a personal account of USAMRIID’s hantavirus research over the past four decades, with an emphasis on studies that I was involved with and the interactions that I had with many of the legendary arbovirologists of the time." @default.
