- W4385385416 abstract "Diverse plants provide numerous assets to humans and subsist as the aetiology of naturally occurring inhibitory compounds against microbial infections. The production of Musa paradisiaca has gradually declined due to susceptibility to fungal diseases with a consequent reduction in its global economic and nutritional benefits. Currently, the extensive application of synthetic fungicides to control these diseases has constituted toxicological risks to man and the environment, but the phytochemicals of medicinal plants are regarded as safe and potent alternatives. This study aimed to determine the in vitro antifungal activity of Bauhinia monandra leaf extracts against phytopathogenic fungi isolated from spoilt plantains. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts of B. monandra leaves were evaluated for their antifungal properties. Qualitative phytochemical screening showed the presence of carbohydrates, anthraquinones, tannins, saponins, steroids, cardiac glycosides, quinones, coumarins, flavonoids, acids, terpenoids and alkaloids. In vitro screening, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) of the extract types against tested mycoflora of Aspergillus niger, A. fumigatus, A. flavus, Alternaria sp., Geotrichum sp. and Rhizopus sp. was done using the agar-well diffusion method. Both extracts showed equal or higher inhibitory activity compared to the positive control ketoconazole. The highest zone of inhibition was found in the aqueous extract against Geotrichum (30 mm). The MIC and MFC values were 125 mg/mL and 62.5 mg/mL, respectively. The antifungal assessment showed that both aqueous and ethanolic extracts of B. monandra exhibited inhibitory effects against tested fungal pathogens except Geotrichum sp. which was resistant to the ethanolic extract. There was greater inhibitory activity by the aqueous extract than by the ethanolic extract. This study showed that the leaf extracts of B. monandra are a potential source of antifungal for use as bio-fungicides against fungal diseases of Musa paradisiaca." @default.
