- W4385440893 abstract "Abstract The major meta-semantic question facing robust realists concerns how moral terms—like ‘right’ and ‘good’ in English—can refer to robust moral properties (given that such properties are stance-independent, non-natural, and causally inert). This chapter provides an answer to this question of semantic access. It rejects the conceptual role semantics that is often taken to be the best meta-semantic theory for robust realism, and instead defends a theory of ‘moral mental files.’ It argues that this theory is well-placed to explain certain judgements about when moral dialogue and disagreement are (and are not) possible. And it shows that the theory of moral mental files has two big payoffs for robust realism: it provides resources to accommodate certain views of moral motivation, and it affords a nuanced answer to the challenge posed by the alleged possibility of alternative normative concepts." @default.
