- W4385486162 abstract "In recent years, there has been a significant interest in using microalgal lipids in the chemical, food pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Haematococcus pluvialis, a unicellular microalga distributed in various habitats worldwide, is considered the best astaxanthin natural source. Astaxanthin is a natural carotenoid and possesses various beneficial effects in various industries including additives in animal feed, food coloration, pharmaceutical industry, cosmetic industry. Generally, lipids are chemically heterogeneous substances, insoluble in water, but soluble in non-polar solvents. Lipids all contain either fatty acyl/alkyl, sphingosine or isoprene fractions as their hydrophobic building blocks. The rapid progress in analytical chemistry techniques, mostly chromatographic separation methods and mass spectrometry identification techniques, alongside the wide knowledge in bioinformatics, led to the development of lipidomics. Lipidomics is used to describe the complete lipid profiles and networks of cellular lipid metabolism within a cell, tissue or a biological system and provides a powerful tool to quantify the changes in individual lipids that may help reveal lipid biomarkers in diseases. This chapter briefly discuss about the lipid compounds, metabolic pathway, and surface-active biomolecules produced by microorganisms with a wide range of applications." @default.
