- W4385525105 abstract "Evidence-based sedative, analgesic, and paralytic therapy is a major component of delivering competent care in the ICU. Multimodal therapy is a key element in achieving adequate pain control and sedation. Adequate pain control should be sought because of improved patient outcomes. Acute pain management does more than just improve patient satisfaction and lessen acute anxiety and agitation; it can also provide lasting benefit such as reducing the development of chronic pain and ICU-related posttraumatic stress disorder. While there are sufficient medications and strategies of pain control in most all patients today, there is a role for pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic innovations to improve a patient’s ICU experience. Future development should be directed toward better pain control, fewer side effects, wider therapeutic windows, and decreased potential of abuse. Nonpharmacologic therapies may be an overlooked adjunct to care and merit further investigation." @default.
