- W4385561704 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of rabies, an entirely vaccine preventable disease that kills thousands of people annually around the world. Over 99% of human rabies deaths are caused by dog-mediated rabies and occur in low- and middle-income countries, with the virus having been eliminated from domestic dog populations in high-income countries and other rabies virus variants circulating only in geographically localized wildlife reservoirs. Unfortunately, there are currently no effective antiviral treatments for rabies, which has the highest case fatality rate of any known infectious disease. As a result, compassionate palliative care is the most appropriate approach for patients presenting with rabies symptoms. Many human rabies cases are misdiagnosed, and laboratory testing is rarely used to confirm cases. This leads to underreporting and a lack of investment in rabies prevention and control efforts. However, post-exposure prophylaxis given to bite victims immediately after exposure is nearly 100% effective in preventing human rabies. As such, this chapter focuses on the World Health Organization's latest guidance on dose-sparing, cost-effective regimens for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. These guidelines aim to improve access to populations at risk and represent the primary means of preventing rabies in settings where the disease is endemic." @default.
