- W4385568903 abstract "Oil palm is well-known as one of the ecologically interesting and environmentally friendly crops in the world. The oil palm has features that make it an environmentally stable crop, such as effective protection of the soil against the impact of torrential rains and excessive heat, soil erosion, and fixes atmospheric nitrogen content as well. Given the increasing criticism of current growing practices of the oil palm, the industry will have to find alternative, more ecologically friendly methods. By planting the crop in soils that have been degraded, the oil palm could be converted from a destructive into an ecologically attractive crop. The reclamation of large, degraded areas and the protection of the young crop will require considerable investments, but the costs involved may eventually not be higher than those involved in deforestation. In this study, the ideas, concepts, and proposed methods to utilize degraded land will be discussed. Focus is given to the condition in Indonesia and, to some extent, Malaysia as the biggest producing countries with similar climate and close political and cultural profiles. It will give another side view of promoting oil palm as a method to support food supply, energy resilience, and environmental consideration." @default.
