- W4385570107 abstract "Secularism in the Indian context implies that the state should respect all religious traditions present in the society but favour none. In other words, the state should not be opposed to religious communities and their institutions; neither should it promote religious nationalism on the basis of the Hindu majority community to the detriment of minority communities such as the Muslim and the Christian. How do the young people belonging to Christian, Muslim and Hindu traditions assess the state-religion rapport, namely, the obligations of the one and the rights of the other in the educational and public spheres? Do their religious attitude and experience of democracy, besides their personal profile and psychosocial traits, influence their understanding of the state-religion separation? The empirical research undertaken among 1215 college students in Tamil Nadu, India, leads to some relevant findings. As regards religion’s right, we find that Muslims affirm it more strongly with reference to the educational sphere, and Christians, in connection with the public sphere. Concerning state’s autonomy in these two spheres, the three religious groups take only a positive ambivalent stand. We also find that some aspects of their religious attitude (e.g., belief in God and transformative function of religion) and their experience of democracy (e.g., human dignity and functioning of the three powers) influence their understanding of the state-religion rapport in the educational and public spheres. We conclude by highlighting the significance of the findings." @default.
