- W4385578908 abstract "Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE)'s greatest strength is to provide objective measures of chemical consumption in different populations. But to compare consumption either spatially or temporally, the consumption estimates need to be population normalized. Determining the population size which contributed to a sample is not trivial as catchment populations are dynamic, i.e., people regularly moving in and out of a catchment. As such, the uncertainty in population size estimation is one of the largest uncertainties in WBE. Multiple approaches have been taken to both estimate the de jure (residential) population and the de facto population (the population present in a specified area during a given time). These include potential markers within the samples themselves, such as nutrients (e.g., ammonium), stimulants (e.g., caffeine and nicotine), pharmaceuticals (e.g., ibuprofen) and artificial sweeteners, and endogenous compounds (e.g., cholesterol derivatives). Additionally, proxies of movement in and out of catchments, such as mobile phone ping data, have also been considered. However, to date, none are without limitation, and none can be applied in all scenarios. In this chapter, we will evaluate the state-of-the-art in population size estimation for WBE, looking at the multiple approaches taken, the strengths and limitations, and perspectives on how to reduce these limitations. Emphasis will be placed on calibrating within sample population markers and a strategy to identify population markers with universal application." @default.
