- W4385587897 abstract "This chapter discusses evidence that indoor air pollution from the use of personal care products in confined spaces may be contributing to irritant and/or allergenic respiratory diseases. Damage to the epithelial lining of the respiratory tract by irritant chemicals can give local sensory irritation and/or local cytotoxic inflammatory responses through the innate immune system, while damage from allergenic chemicals may result in hypersensitivity inflammatory responses through the adaptive immune system. Many chemical components of personal care products have been measured as routinely present in indoor air environments allowing for long-term inhalation exposure of occupiers of those spaces. Although the origin of compounds measured in indoor air cannot be identified to specific products, many of the measured compounds are highly likely to have originated from and/or been contributed to by the use of personal care products including phthalates, parabens, fragrance chemicals, triclosan, and cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes. Contamination of indoor air in beauty salons by volatile compounds including formaldehyde and acrylates has been recorded as associated with adverse respiratory health in salon workers. Volatile fragrance chemicals are added to personal care products to give the product a pleasant smell, but their inhalation has been linked in some users to development or worsening of asthma conditions. Implications for the inhalation of talcum powder and nanomaterials are discussed. A greater public appreciation of the need for careful use of spray and powder consumer products could help to reduce exposures, and greater regard during use is needed for increased ventilation in indoor spaces and contamination of air around vulnerable adults and children." @default.
