First through sleepy suburbs with lime-green lawns and blue atlas cedars, then on forest trails that led me deeper into the heart of things. I felt the earthy scents of dampness, pine, and moss infiltrate my senses. I noticed rods of sunlight filtering through dense, leafy canopies; spiderwebs glistening, diamond-like, after a rain; upturned tree trunks, roots exposed, clinging to clods of dirt and rocks; wild geese sliding silently into a lake; the sound of water laughing as it skipped and bubbled over rocks.
