- W4385668629 abstract "Reviewed by: Iban by Ulrich Fuetrer Sara S. Poor ulrich fuetrer, Iban, ed. and trans., Joseph M. Sullivan. Arthurian Archives XXII; German Romance VII. Rochester, NY: D.S. Brewer, 2022. Pp. xxxix, 157. isbn: 978–1–84384–621–5. $105. Adding to the list of useful translations of Arthurian narratives in D.S. Brewer's Arthurian Archives series, Joseph M. Sullivan edits and translates a late medieval rendition of the Yvain/Iwein matter, this time bearing yet another variation on the hero's name, Iban. Composed by Ulrich Fuetrer (born no later than 1420) as part of his compilation of fifteen narrative poems entitled Das Buch der Abenteuer [The Book of Adventures], which he produced in the 1480s on commission from Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria-Munich, the text is usefully presented here in facing page format. The original, late fifteenth-century (Bavarian) German is printed opposite a more or less line-by-line English translation. This format is especially welcome, as it will enable readers (especially those not so familiar with German) to have access to one of the most remarkable things about Fuetrer's version of the Iwein material: namely, its poetic form. For one of the major changes Fuetrer makes to Hartmann's text is to rewrite it in a strophic form known as the 'Titurel-Strophe.' As Sullivan succinctly describes it, this is 'a virtuoso stanzaic form featuring seven lines of alternating stressed and unstressed syllables that follow an ababcxc rhyme scheme' (p. xxi). No matter what one might think of Fuetrer's other innovations to the narrative (see below), one has to admire the poetic skill evident in the execution of this form not only in Iban, but in all of the narratives included in The Book of Adventures (all 11,655 strophes, which amount to almost 82,000 verses). Sullivan's stated aim is to offer literal translations of the verses in order to enable readers to engage with Fuetrer's 'mastery' of this form. While this approach means that the English does not always flow as smoothly as some might like, Sullivan should nevertheless be lauded for making this striking aspect of this work visible and accessible to English-speaking audiences. In his thorough introduction to the text and translation, Sullivan situates Iban in relation to both the compilation of which it is a part and its more widely known source (Hartmann von Aue's Iwein). Noteworthy here is Sullivan's interpretation of Fuetrer's various changes to Hartmann's tale (and that of Chrétien de Troyes before him). As Sullivan argues, Fuetrer streamlines the narrative by omitting parts that were deemed unnecessary to the movement of the plot. Further, he makes changes that affect the moral thrust of the titular knight's journey. Fuetrer's 'programme' (p. xxiv), as Sullivan calls it, is to present the members of the court in general and the main characters of the story in particular (Calogrenant, Guinevere, Arthur, Gawain, Lunete, and Iban) more positively and in a more exemplary light. For example, according to Sullivan, Fuetrer's changes in various scenes of decision making were [End Page 182] 'intended' to promote the beneficial quality of noble counsel (p. 137). Sullivan is doubtless right in arguing that the changes made in this adaptation of Hartmann's Iwein must be connected to fifteenth-century (nostalgic, conservative) views of noble counsel, knight-on-knight combat, and the nature of the marital contract, especially in light of the fact that the Book of Adventures was compiled for Duke Albrecht. My one quibble with this interpretive framework is that these astute observations are too often couched in the language of authorial intention, an approach which some readers may find distracting. But this is a minor quibble when juxtaposed with the obvious expertise in Iwein/Yvain and Iban scholarship that Sullivan demonstrates throughout this welcome contribution to Arthurian Studies.
