- W4385671027 abstract "To establish history as a unique discipline, historians strove to distance themselves from antiquarianism. This chapter reconsiders the argument about history and antiquarianism as two distinct historical practices by the early 1880s and argues that the boundary between the two approaches to the past remained fluid and unfixed at least until the turn of the century. Readers, critics, and other commentators were unable to identify a clear break between historians and antiquarians who both seemed obsessed about the virtues of completeness and perfection and passionate about collecting historical details. The bulkiness of their books became the paratext that symbolized this confusion. Historians defended their unique disciplinary status by appealing to their distinct methods and approaches to history. Yet they failed to convince the audience about this as they admitted themselves that their scholarly persona mixed, and even should mix, elements from both history and antiquarianism." @default.
