- W4385764065 abstract "(2968) Fuscidea V. Wirth & Vězda in Beitr. Naturk. Forsch. Südwestdeutschl. 31: 91. 1 Nov 1972, nom. cons. prop. Typus: F. aggregata (Flot.) V. Wirth & Vězda 1972, non Chevall. 1826 (Lecidea contigua b. aggregata Flot., Lecidea aggregatilis Grummann, F. aggregatilis (Grummann) V. Wirth & Vězda). (=) Maronea A. Massal in Flora 39: 291. 21 Mai 1856, nom. rej. prop. Typus: M. berica A. Massal. Several molecular studies have indicated that Fuscidea and Maronea are paraphyletic. The first phylogeny that showed this was that of Bylin & al. (in Biblioth. Lichenol. 96: 49–60. 2007), in which M. constans is placed inside a monophyletic group with several species of Fuscidea. These results were later confirmed by Miadlikowska & al. (in Molec. Phylogen. Evol. 79: 132–168. 2014). Both these studies had very limited sampling, and Fuscidea was not the main aim of the studies. Later Zahradnikova (Taxon. Phylogen. Fuscideaceae. 2017; Ph.D. thesis; bora.uib.no) confirmed the results, but now with more intense sampling of Fuscidea, and it became clear that Maronea was embedded in a large monophyletic Fuscidea. To obtain a monophyletic genus and to avoid disadvantageous nomenclature changes, we propose that Fuscidea be conserved against Maronea. Maronea was described by Massalongo (in Flora 39: 291. 1856) and comprises about 12 species (Kantvilas in Biblioth. Lichenol. 78: 169–192. 2001) distributed in tropical and warm-temperate areas. Many of these species are known only from their type localities. Maronea constans and M. polyphaea have larger ranges, being distributed globally and in North America, respectively. The type of Maronea, M. berica, is currently considered a taxonomic synonym of M. constans (Nyl.) Hepp (Flecht. Europ.: 771. 1860), based on Lecanora constans Nyl. (in Mém. Soc. Imp. Sci. Nat. Cherbourg 3: 199. 1855). Fuscidea was validly published by Wirth & Vězda (in Beitr. Naturk. Forsch. Südwestdeutschl. 31: 91–92. 1972), but had appeared earlier (Wirth in Diss. Bot. 17: 286. 1972) but not as a validly published name as no type was indicated. Wirth & Vězda (l.c.) indicated the type as F. aggregata (Flot.) V. Wirth & Vězda, which, although a superfluous name as Lecidea aggregatilis Grummann (Cat. Lich. Germ.: 19. 1963) was cited in its synonymy, is legitimate (ICN Art. 52.4; Turland & al in Regnum Veg. 159. 2018), being based on L. contigua b. aggregata Flot. (in Flora 11: 674. 1828). Vězda (Lichenes Select. Exsicc. [Průhonice] 56: 6, No. 1397. 1976) later published the homotypic Fuscidea aggregatilis (Grummann) V. Wirth & Vězda as the correct name, but this is currently considered a taxonomic synonym of F. austera (Nyl.) P. James (Lecanora austera Nyl. in Flora 57: 309. 1874). The genus Fuscidea comprises more than 40 species distributed mainly in the Northern, but also in the Southern Hemisphere. Many of these species are well known and common in moist areas. Maronea is embedded in a large clade of Fuscidea species. To obtain a monophyletic genus, there are several options. The first obvious solution is to transfer all the Fuscidea species to Maronea, as Maronea was described before Fuscidea. But as the number of species is much higher in Fuscidea (more than 40) than in Maronea (12), and Fuscidea is a well-known, large genus, whereas Maronea has a more limited distribution, a transfer of all species to Maronea will have a negative impact as the number of name changes will be high. An alternative might be to split Fuscidea into several smaller genera, Maronea being one of them. However, this would also require numerous name changes, and we consider this to be a disadvantageous solution. It is not systematically preferable either, since Fuscidea/Maronea together form a strongly supported monophyletic group. The last and most favourable solution, which we believe best serves nomenclatural stability, is to conserve the name Fuscidea against Maronea. This will result in only minor name changes of Maronea species and in a monophyletic group in the Fuscideaceae. Consequently, we here propose Fuscidea be conserved against Maronea.
