- W4385771298 abstract "Major Depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability and mounting evidence shows that it is a burdensome condition with a negative impact on educational trajectories, work performance, and other areas of life. MDD is a global phenomenon and is on the rise among adults and aged, which if it remains unmanaged, may increase the risk for substance abuse, chronic conditions (e.g., cardiovascular disease), and premature mortality. Treatment options for depression involve modalities viz., pharmacotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and others. In modern medicine, MDD has gained popularity as an inflammatory disorder and the hypothesis is based on the evidence that levels of several proinflammatory markers are enhanced under conditions of depression. Evidence viz., significant alteration of gut microbiome (GM) patterns among people with depression and strong association of GM function to mental well-being has prompted researchers to explore the association of GM and MDD. Ayurveda has proposed a mechanism of causation for depression which is strikingly similar to a modern biomedical understanding which links MDD to a dysregulation of the GI tract. Interestingly, ayurvedic medicine offers an in-depth understanding about the functioning of the mind and body as a nondualistic entity and emphasizes the importance of considering the gut while addressing MDD. This concept posits factors viz., diet, lifestyle, and psychological stress as the key causative factors, while GI dysfunction and ensuing inflammatory changes as the key mediating factor. Although existing evidence on the role of GM in the brain-gut axis in development or maintenance of MDD and depression is still limited, an integrative holistic approach involving diet and lifestyle alterations along with ayurvedic medicine can prove as an effective option to reduce the global burden of MDD." @default.
