- W4385771329 abstract "Flavonoids are natural plant metabolites which reveal various biological activities. In plants, they can play different roles, including regulation of growth and ripening, control of development, contribution to creation of colors of flowers, protection against microorganisms, repulsion of herbivores, resistance to various environmental stresses, and others. These compounds also have many activities in animal and human organisms, among which antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties are the most widely known, though their biological transactions are significantly broader. Such properties have been employed to test flavonoids as potential therapeutics in a broad spectrum of human diseases, including cancer, infectious diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic defects, and many others. However, despite the encouraging results of in vitro and preclinical experiments with various models (both cellular and animal), along with supporting results of epidemiological analyses of correlations of natural flavonoids' consumption with a lower risk for various diseases, these compounds are rarely used as drugs, and they are commonly available only in the form of dietary supplements. In this chapter, examples of studies on the use of flavonoids as potential therapeutics are presented and discussed, together with the analysis of putative factors causing disappointments in either medical experiments or clinical trials. Finally, it is discussed what is required to employ the high biological potential of flavonoids in creation of real drugs for treatment of various diseases." @default.
