- W4385780993 abstract "In this chapter, we engage with the interactive online project Bosnia: Uncertain Paths to Peace created by Fred Ritchin and Gilles Peress in cooperation with the New York Times on the Web in 1996. In this interactive, multimedia project, Ritchin and Peress described “the tentative making of peace” (Ritchin in After Photography, W.W. Norton, New York, 2009: 102) by combining text, audio snippets and images without establishing a hierarchic relationship among them. The project utilized the then “new strategies made possible by the Web” (Ritchin in After Photography, W.W. Norton, New York, 2009: 102) in order to call into question photojournalism’s conventional objectives: the project’s most noteworthy feature was its high degree of interactivity, inevitably leading to a plurality of simultaneously existing narratives that are neither prescribed by the project’s creators, hierarchically ordered, nor assessed in light of their truth value. The project challenged the authorial voice of its creators while allowing for an unusual degree of audience participation and co-authorship, thus appealing to tolerance of ambiguity rather than to disambiguation. We present its main ideas (Ritchin in After Photography, W.W. Norton, New York, 2009); its practical implementation as well as its design and discuss its relation to other formats of visual reporting that emerged as a consequence of both the crisis of photojournalism (see Chapter 4 ) and processes of digitization (see Chapter 5 ). The project is an important precursor to current war photography aiming to acknowledge the messiness of violent conflict rather than reducing it to simple but misleading narratives. Both the narrative pluralism and the interactive design of the website challenge some of the foundations of photojournalistic practice. By doing so, the project changes the audience’s viewing experience. It acknowledges the creator’s naturally limited knowledge about the issue at hand and allows for the possibility of a variety of interpretations of the conflict." @default.
