- W4385783344 abstract "Mid- to late-career clinician educators (CEs) face many transitions, successes, and setbacks with variable guidance. Inflection points, or times of pivotal decision, occur during transitions between junior, mid, senior, and emeritus phases. Unanticipated inflection points can occur with new performance expectations, direct report changes, and evolving family responsibilities. These transitions can be particularly difficult for historically marginalized faculty. Over a CE’s career, professional and personal priorities often evolve and may conflict with those of employers, potentially creating times of high personal and professional vulnerability.Hindu teachings outline 4 stages of life.1 During stage 2—Grihastha—an individual builds a career and accumulates earthly possessions; it is a time of professional advancement and increasing stature. In stage 3—Vanaprastha—one’s time is more about service, sharing, and building upon accumulated wisdom. These 2 stages are emblematic of mid and senior CE careers.By mid-career, CEs often have achieved initial career goals, such as outstanding teacher recognition, educational leadership, and advancement in academic rank. But mid-career faculty are often the least satisfied when compared to early- or late-career faculty, with dissatisfaction increasing the longer an associate professor remains in rank.2 In the business world, more than half of senior executive women report an intense burst of gender bias in mid-career, which is associated with unfair assumptions rooted in gender stereotypes, increased scrutiny, and unequal access.3Beginning at mid-career, institutions seek more return on their CE investments in the form of greater service or broader leadership roles. These increased demands can detract from time to pursue individual professional priorities and be at odds with what originally attracted clinicians to medical education.4 These inflection points may be more difficult to negotiate, because of having fewer mentors and sponsors, in CEs from underrepresented groups or in the setting of professional burnout." @default.
