- W4385786349 abstract "English Medium Instruction (EMI) has developed rapidly worldwide and has been applied as an important contributor in higher education. In the past few decades, controversies and arguments of EMI have risen and one area is the English proficiency of teaching staff. Arguments in this area are mainly focused on whether the content lecturers have sufficient language proficiency to teach content knowledge, especially for teachers who do not use English as their first language. Teaching content through an additional language could be seen as more difficult and complex in their teaching practice, and the efficacy in teaching and learning is usually concerned. This research selects EMI institutions in HE in China and Japan to conduct a qualitative case study. It aims to explore how EMI lecturers’ English proficiency matters in their teaching practice is valued. The research also aims to compare how these opinions derive between content lecturers and English language teachers, and how voices from China and Japan indicate similarities and differences. Being triggered by the research objectives, the research questions are listed concerning the pedagogical aims of lecturers, opinions towards the influences lecturers’ English proficiency may influence their teaching practice and the perceptions on English language support to content lecturers in EMI HE. The study recruited five participants who are content lecturers and language teachers in EMI universities in China and Japan. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect empirical data. Theoretical thematic analysis was later conducted in order to identify certain themes. Results were addressed flowing the order of themes. The results indicate various attitudes among individuals to research questions. Similar perceptions could be spotted within the group of content lecturers and language teachers, and differences were also revealed from the specific contexts in China and Japan. Implementations regarding further areas of study were made along with three limitations of the methods and the design of this study." @default.
